What is the most important thing on a fishing tackle website?
I have a fishing tackle website where I sell all types of fishing supplies. My family has run the business for 50 years and I just started the online store. Wondering what everyone is looking for in a site. I know price is a big factor but what else is important? Pictures, blog, info? thanks for your help.

Who is gonna pay premium prices on a lure that only has 1 “grainy” photo.
Descriptions!
Cabelas and Bass Pro both can be “wishy washy” about some of their products, (which is highly irritating). Simply??- describe the product WELL!!! Don’t forget to mention sizes and weights, Etc.
Having a “how to” section is always good.
Links to some of your competitors is not a bad idea, (esp if you are selling your products at the same price!).
Shipping should be FREE (or close to that). With all the various shipping companys “deals” out there, don’t try to “gouge” your customers for an extra “shipping” buck.
Hope this helps ya?
A lot of older anglers might not be real internet savvy. My Dad has a computer but doesn’t know a whole lot about using it. So an easy to use website would be crucial. A simple lay-out and not a lot of links leading to the same place. Everything put into easily understood catagories with a button for each catagory. (Crankbaits, Jerkbaits, Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, Soft Plastics, Jigs, etc.) Large up close pictures of the products are essential to any good website. And detailed specs on everything.
Content, content and content. All starts with your keywords, make sure your homepage content is optimize to your selected keywords (start with 3 keywords) or you will not rank high enough on the search engine and no one will find your website. Another thing you need to know is that, do not put too many photos on your landing page because if someone checking out your site does not have a lot of ram on their computer it could take forever to bring up site. Quality product is important, but if you have no traffic going in then you will not make any sale. TRAFFIC IS KEY HERE. Start a blog to direct traffic to your site, post in fishing forums, PPC..etc.
I just now visited your site, it looks very good. It takes a bit longer to load than the average site, this may be because you have so much stuff on the opening page. But once it all loaded I had no problem navigating the site. What I want in an online “tackle store” is a good selection of products, looks like you have that. Also a range from the “classics” (think Zebco cheapies) to the hard to find to the latest in electronics and high-end tackle. One place that has it all. For me, one very important thing is the final delivered price. Can I save enough over my local Gander Mountain or Cabelas or tackle shop to make it worth waiting a few extra days to get it?
I had a look at your site and the first thing that jumped out at me was the poor spelling. I’m not knocking your site but you need it to look as professional as possible. Poor spelling just looks unprofessional and hackey. Clean up the spelling and try to compress the images so that it loads a little faster. Good Luck with it.
Wow, NICE prices! SO, how much is the shipping? As Fisher_King said, don’t make people pay a lot for shipping. Cost of shipping is one of my main “look-outs” when dealing with an online shop! Bass Pro Shops & Cabelas would be good examples, BPS’s shipping starts out at $5, while Cabela’s starts out at $6. In my opinion, for very little things, like a package or two of Plastic Worms, shipping should cost around $2. For larger items, the higher the prices go up. Nice price on the Ambassadeur C3 too, It’s about $5 cheaper than most sites ….
Same goes with most of the other prices of products that you sell!
BUT, how much is the shipping?
I gave a thumbs up to Fisher King and about spelling both real good stuff. But, decided to come back to add a few things. Pictures yes of course, including the ones that are solely used for sizing. Like for terminal tackle is very important (for swivels, hooks, lead heads and weights) also baits sizes should be real size not reduced in size to get more on a page and lastly (re: pictures) all color offerings (factory offered) should accompany each bait with all clear markings showing full well the entire baits color and number. Low shipping charges is a must, no mark-up (which gives real cause for concern) so when we get what we order we know we paid you five dollars on the invoice but on the package it shows you were only charged $2.43. The one and most important thing I want to see is “mark downs” and “closeouts”. Because inventory seasonally shifts and can cause an abundance of stock now dead on the shelf where the new seasonal mdse needs to go. By reducing prices you will reduce un moving inventory to open up money to buy more seasonally important items. I think that an “as is” section is a must. Especially for the walk-in idiots who break things in the retail store, you know they hit the ceiling or drop and break something or returned out of box items. This allows the many on line shoppers, who do their own repairs, (like many of us do) to get really specially sweet deals. Lastly a no questions asked return policy is mandate for these times (of course they pay the U P S charges for each return). Good question and good success to you, your family and your store. After checking out your site I saw that exclusivity to certain manufacturers could be a problem especially when the others in the same product lines aren’t represented and should be. Manufacturers owe you nothing in fact they should pay you to sell their goods open up the flood gates and get the products dominating tournaments.
I don’t know if it’s because i am in the UK but it took an age to download the first page. If it was a sight i had hit by using a search engine i would have left it before it had even downloaded. Also the headline is loaded with too many keywords, this would be fine if you had spent more effort in trying to make them fit seamlessly into the dialogue, it just doesn’t read well and comes over like a very amateurish site. I did’nt wait long enough to see what products you have or the cost because my first impression said ‘why would i spend money here?’ i am afraid there are too many other good sites out there and for now they would get my custom.
I would speed up the page, check the spelling, add a few good graphics, rewrite the header. good luck
How about a no questions asked for any reason a customer is not satisfied with any product, they will get an exchange or money back.
