Fishing Supplies for a turning 6yo?

Evan’s been wanting to Fish, so for his birthday I am thinking about buying him a Fishing rod and stuff. We all are going to buy our own fishing rods as well, Mom and I because we don’t have them ourselves, so we need easy to use fish equipment.

Are these OK for a 6yo? (turning 6)

What about hooks and containers for the fish (I know he will be interested in keeping some of the fish we catch in our 55gal, so we may do that.
Or what about a fish net for catching wild fish or tadpoles, for our spare 10gal?

I recommend the second fishing pole. I they also carry matching tackle boxes in the store as well. As for bringing the fish home, if the walmart by you is a super center go to the bakery and ask if they have any frosting buckets you can have. They are pretty good sized, just need to be cleaned out.

I would say that the second one would be the best for a six year old. i is resonally priced too.

I’d go with the 2nd choice. Most older kids think that the ones with the little back packs & sunglasses are for babies.

I would say the second one. LL Bean makes a great kids fishing set. It’s a little pricey but well worth it if you think he will take up fishing. Here’s a link:

I would not recommend buying the plastic spider man or other kid fishing pole. The line gets tangled easlily and hung up in the reel. You’ll spend a lot of time trying to untangle the line. Besides, if he does catch a fish of any size, the pole will break.

When you’re looking for the adult sized fishing pole, there are different lengths, so be sure to buy a shorter one for your son.

A basic tackle box. Bobbers, extra fishing line, hooks, sinkers, some plastic worms or other type of bait. Some pliers (to work the hook out of the mouth of the fish if necessary). Scissors (we keep kitchen scissors in ours–you never know). A metal collapsable fishing net so that you can put the fish in and then put the basket in the water to keep the fish alive. A metal stringer.

I wouldnt really recommend keeping any fish that you would catch in your acquarium. This would be a good time to talk to your son about not keeping a wild animals caged up. I think that the fish would almost certainly die. They’re used to getting all of their nutrients from the pond or lake and then you’re going to put them in a tank in your home. I think that it’d be neat, but it is extremely hard to keep them alive in a tank at home. If you think you might want to take some home, though, get a bucket or a styrofoam cooler to haul the fish home in, fill the container with the water from the pond and be sure to not put the lid on the bucket-sealed down.

The tadpoles sound like a huge, stinky mess. If you do catch some, I’d keep them in a jar or something. It won’t take long for them to transitions. Just use the jar itself to catch them.

If you are taking your son to a private pond or lake, call ahead to see what type of bait they recommend. They will most likely have the bait at the site to purchase.

Be sure to buy your fishing license while at Wal-Mart unless you are planning on taking your son to a private pond where they don’t require fishing licenses for adults. In some areas (ours) you can get a ticket for fishing without a license (around $150.00).

Have fun!
